Fun Winter Wine Events

It’s winter, temperatures are cold outside and the vines in wine country are dormant and desperately hoping for some rain to allow nice growth and blossoming in the spring.   Don”t be fooled into thinking there’s nothing going on in wine country.  There are actually plently of reasons to visit wine country which is actually quite peaceful and beautiful this time of year.  There are also some great wine events in San Francisco that you should also consider checking out.

Here are some fun winter wine events I highly recommend you consider attending:

Winter Wineland Sonoma Wine Road is next weekend January 18-19 in Sonoma .  This event is a great opportunity to meet winemakers, taste limited production wines, new releases and  library wines.  139 wineries in Alexander Valley, Russian River Valley,  Dry Creek  Valley,  Healdsburg, Santa Rosa & Geyserville are participating.   All participating wineries will have something on SALE for the weekend!  Some wineries will offer food pairings and others will have tours.  Ticket price  includes wine tasting at all of the participating wineries for the weekend.  This event does not take place at one location, instead you travel from winery to winery, visiting the ones you are interested in exploring.  Tickets are $50 for tasting both Saturday & Sunday or $40 for tasting Sunday only

 Zinfandel Experience is January 23-25.   This event focuses purely on Zinfandel and this year ZAP has an exciting new format at a new venue in San Francisco.  There are 4 events to choose from and you can pick one or make a weekend out of it and attend them all.  The event kicks off Thursday January 23 with Epicuria at the Golden Gate Club.  This event includes Zinfandel from 30 wineries specifically paired with delicious culinary creations by amazing master chefs and tickets are .  Friday January 24  in the morning is Flights a tasting smeinar focusing on higly allocated limited production Zinfandel and a chance to learn from the experts.  Friday night is a Winemakers Dinner at The Four Seasons Hotel where 18 wineries will serve specially selected wines to accompany dinner and attendees will have a chance to bid on  incredible packages combining wine, art, travel, culinary and interactive wine experiences in a auction.  Finally Saturday January 25 is Tasting Tracks in the Presidio.  There are three tracks, a sensory tating, a reserve and barrel tasting & a terroir tasting you can attend just one or goto all three.  This is a great chance to learn more about zinfandel.  For Information and tickets go to http://www.zinfandel.org/default.asp?cid=1&n1=2&n2=1248

Around the World in 80 Sips® presented by Bottlenotes is Friday February 7th at the Golden Gate Club in the Presidio 7:30-9:30 with VIP access starting at 6:30.   This event provides a chance to taste wines from a wide range of countries and regions including California, Spain, Portugal, New Zealand and more.  Discover new favorites and ask the experts questions to boost your knowledge.  Enjoy light hors d’oeuvres and chocolate pairings.   There’s also an opportunity to purchase tickets to the special  “Sherry-Lehmann Suite” offering a rare opportunity to try some of the world’s top wines in one place throughout the duration of the event. The International Alcace Festival is in Anderson Valley February 8-9.  This is a weekened celebration of aromatic white Alcace varietal wines.  On Saturday February 8th, winemakers from France, Germany & New Zealand will be pouring wines alongside wineries from Michigan, NY, Oregon, California & Anderson Valley.  Over 100 wines will be available to sample along with delectable bites at seven food pairing tables.  Saturday night there is a winemakers dinner at Scharffenberger Cellars and Sunday many wienries in Anderson Valley will have open houses with wine & food pairings so consider making a weekend out of it http://www.avwines.com/alsace-festival/
