Amazing Food & Wine in Picturesque St. Helena

bASH is an annual food and wine pairing competition put on by Appellation St. Helena, the St Helena Chamber of commerce and the Culinary institute of America at Greystone which is located in St. Helena.  Hosted by the Culinary Institute of America at Greystone, the event showcases the amazing wines of St. Helena paired with delicious foods made by local St. Helena restaurants and teams of student chefs from the Culinary institute of America at Greystone.  Attendees of the event taste and then vote for their favorite food and wine parings with prizes awarded to the winning chefs.

This year there were 34 wineries paired with chefs participating in the event which included 27 teams of 2 student chefs from the Culinary Institute at Greystone. The varietals poured included reds of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petite Sirah, Zinfandel & San Giovese and whites of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Muscato di Canelli, demonstrating the diversity of the amazing wines available in Appellation St. Helena.

The winning restaurant team was Chef Jeanna Demarco of Sweetpea Catering & Private Chef  Services who made Monticello braised shortrib tortellini with black pepper cream sauce & pumpkin seed pesto paired with Corely Family Napa Valley 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon from Yewell Vinyard.  The winning student team was Shenelle Perez & Byonghan Koh from the CIA at Greystone who made blue cheese mousse cones paired with Calafia Cellars 2010 “La Reina” Cabernet Sauvignon

bASH does a great job of capturing the food, wine and spirit of the chefs and winemakers of  St. Helena while highlighting the student chef program of the Culinary Institute of America at Greystone. I highly recommend checking the event out,  but don’t wait a whole year to visit St. Helena!

St. Helena has delicious restaurants, amazing wineries and beautiful vineyard views and is a great place to visit for the day, the weekend or longer.
