Bubbly Options for Valentine’s Day

Celebrate Valentine’s Day and toast your sweetie with bubbly.  Bubbly comes in many forms and can be found at many price points from inexpensive to very expensive.

Champagne comes from the champagne region in France and ferments in the bottle which is called methode champenoise. Champagne  is generally the most pricey of bubbly options.  Louis Roederer Cristal, which is quite tasty, retails for over $200 a bottle. Taittinger is another great tasting champagne but it does not come cheap.

Moet Chandon’s Domaine Chandon, Louis Roederer’s Roedrerer Estate and Tattinger’s Domaine Carneros are all sparkling wines made in CA by French owned champagne houses and are generally less expensive than their champagnes from France.

Other great California sparkling wine options are Rack & Riddle Brut from Mendocino,  Scharffenberger Cellars Brut from Anderson Valley and Spanish owned Gloria Ferrer Blanc de Blanc from Sonoma.

Cava from Spain,  Proseco from Italy,  Espumante from Portugal, Sekt from Germany or sparkling Shiraz from Australia are other sparkling options that generally are less expensive than both champagne and sparkling wine.

Champagne is made from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meniur while sparkling wines are typically made from a combination of some or all of the varietals of Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay or Pinot Noir.  Sparkling Shiraz is generally sweeter than champagne and is made from Shiraz grapes.  A great sparkling shiraz to try from Lake County California is Steele Winery Shooting Star Black Bubbles

Best wishes for a Happy Valentines Day to you and your valentine and if you don’t have a valentine, consider opening a bottle of bubbly for yourself to celebrate the great person you are, after all, you deserve to treat yourself!
